Overview: On-Call Information



Call is no more frequent than every 4th night at any site. On-call duties include evaluation of patients in L&D, triage, inpatient OB/GYN service patients and emergency room and in-hospital consultations. Students participate in the care of all teaching service patients undergoing vaginal or cesarean deliveries, as well as hospitalized gyn patients, patients seen in the emergency room or those going to the operating room.

Asheville
5 weekdays and 1 weekend day (Saturday or Sunday) A student call room is provided.  The room has a phone and access to a shared bathroom.  It is in the hospital where the other student call rooms are located.

Chapel Hill
There is a Night Rotation as part of the block schedule. Students will rotate with the Night team Sunday through Thursday with a few exceptions. The medical student call room is located on the Labor & Delivery unit. The call room includes a bunk bed, bath with shower and telephone.

Charlotte
One week of night call (Sunday-Thursday) and then one Saturday (24 hrs) and one Sunday (day-shift).  Carolinas Medical Center has designated medical student call rooms located on the 3rd floor of the Medical Education Building Annex.

Raleigh
Students take call every 4th to 5th night. Students may sleep post call once morning rounds are completed. The medical student call room is located adjacent to Labor & Delivery.  Post call students are excused for the day once they have attended their lectures. Post call students have no clinical duties after morning rounds.

Wilmington
5 nights of night float /night-call
