Overview: Association of Professors in Obstetrics and Gynecology (APGO) Educational Objectives



APGO provides us the 8th Edition of Educational Objectives for 3rd year Clerkships.

As outlined in the document entitled "Women's Heath Care Competencies for Medical Students" Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) the objectives for the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship are as follows:

1. Sex and gender differences in normal development and pathophysiology as they apply to prevention and management of diseases are presented

a. Differences in biological functions, development and pharmacologic response in males and females

i. Anatomic variance
ii. Normal physical and psychological development
iii. Effects of sex hormones on organ systems
iv. Hormonal variations across life spans
v. Sexual response, function and dysfunction
vi. Contraception and sterilization

b. Discuss the pathophysiology, etiology, differential diagnosis, and treatment options for conditions that relate to reproductive biology

 i. Endocrine disorders
ii. Sexually transmitted diseases
iii. Sexual dysfunctions

c. Discuss the pathophysiology, etiology, differential diagnosis, and treatment options for conditions and functions that are specific to women

 i. Normal menstrual cycles
 ii. Abnormal uterine bleeding
iii. Pregnancy options counseling
iv. Normal pregnancy and delivery
v. Gynecologic cancers
vi. Menopause and possible sequelae

2. Assess and counsel regarding sex- and gender-appropriate reduction of risk including lifestyle changes

a. Describe current recommendations for preventative screening and routine health maintenance throughout the life cycle

i. Genetic counseling and testing
ii. Pre-conceptional and pre-natal counseling
iii. High risk sexual behavior
iv. Contraceptive practices
v. Hormone replacement therapy

b. Assess risk and counsel for prevention of specific conditions

i. Genetic disorders
ii. Birth defects
iii. Sexually transmitted diseases
iv. Unintended pregnancy
v. Common malignancies

  • Breast cancer
  • Cervical cancer

vi. Osteoporosis

3. Assess and critically evaluate new information and adopt best practices that incorporate knowledge of sex and gender differences in health and disease
