Overview:  Medical Student Instruction of Pelvic Exams

Medical students rotating on the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship at any of the 5 clerkship sites (MAHEC, Asheville, NC; Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, NC; University of North Carolina Hospitals, Chapel Hill, NC; Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, NC; and New Hanover Regional Hospital, Wilmington, NC) receive instruction regarding the pelvic exam via the following clinical, educational opportunities:

  • In the ambulatory clinics when patients present for obstetric or gynecologic care.

  • On the Labor and Delivery Suite when patients present for care

  • In the Emergency Room when patients present for obstetric or gynecologic care.

  • In the Operative Room

Pelvic exams are performed on women, including exams with a teaching component, only when directly related to patient care and with patient consent.

The greatest respect for patient autonomy has always been the mission of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill regarding this sensitive examination and all aspects of care and will continue to be so.
