Overview

The UNC Family Medicine clerkship is a four week, required rotation. Please read the memo (Family Medicine Site Preference Form) from the Clerkship Director, Dr. Beat Steiner, which contains information on how to sign up for the 2008-09 Family Medicine Clerkship.

The goal of the clerkship is for you to learn how to effectively diagnose and manage common medical conditions and chronic illnesses that present in primary care settings. You will gain this experience in two ways:

  • the 15 days you will spend with your community preceptor seeing patients. To help your preceptor understand your specific learning needs, please complete the Student Background and Interest form (doc) and give it to your preceptor on the first day you are in the office.
  • a defined curriculum developed by Family Medicine faculty, referred to as the “Day Back” curriculum The specifics and logistics for the Day Backs are determined by the AHEC to which you are assigned. Regardless of the AHEC to which you are assigned, the content covered will be the same.

The final day of the rotation is an Assessment Day, and occurs in the Clinical Skills Center in Burnett Womack Building in Chapel Hill . If you need testing accommodations for the written examination, please email Carolyn Joines, the Clerkship Coordinator, by the end of the first week of the clerkship . Your email should include an email attachment of the release form you received from Student Affairs. It goes without saying that missing any of the three Day Backs or the Assessment Day will make it difficult or impossible to determine your grade for the clerkship. So please don't miss any days (review the Absence Policy).
